5km Time Predictor Test

Introduction

Coaches and athletes use the 5km Time Predictor Test to assess an athlete's potential race time.

What is the point?

The 5km is one of the most popular distances among amateur, club and pro racers. Using the 5km Time Predictor Test you can assess your race potential, and also the ongoing effectiveness of your training program.

What do you need?

  • 400 metre track

  • Stopwatch

  • An assistant

How do you do the test?

  • Run 4 ? 1600 metres

  • Allow 90 seconds recovery between each run

  • Record the times

What results you'll get :

This test can be used throughout the training cycle - for example to establish a baseline at the beginning of the training cycle, in the middle of the pre-season, and at the start of the race season.

You can calculate the predicted time by figuring the average of the 4 recorded times and multiplying the result by 3.125. The result is the predicted 5km time for the athlete.

What is being measured again?

This test is used to predict an athlete's potential 5 kilometre time.
