The varied job of an events manager can include duties including planning, co-ordinating and publicizing a wide range of promotional, corporate, educational, sporting and social events. Some events managers are generalists, while others specialise in one or two areas, for example weddings, sporting events, exhibitions, or conferences.
While duties will of course vary from one employer to another, a typical week might involve:
Liaising with clients to determine their needs
Working on budgets and timescales
Visiting venues
Researching contacts and suppliers
Producing promotional materials to publicise the event
Booking equipment and suppliers, venues, caterers, security etc
Ensuring compliance with health and safety, insurance and security regulations
Working the actual event to ensure that everything runs smoothly
While there are no set qualifications to be an events manager, employers typically look for a combination of high academic achievement and experience in a related industry.
Many entrants to this field are graduates, or have at least gained a foundation degree or HNC/HND in events management. Other areas of study that employers would look upon favourably might include business administration, marketing, leisure and tourism management, hospitality management or languages.
Previous experience is highly valued. A background in any of the following would be appropriate:
Sales
Marketing
Public relations
Hotel conference and banqueting
Travel and leisure
There are numerous professional organizations offering training in this field, including:
The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO)
