For those wanting to develop their skills, there are two main nationally recognised qualifications:

  • Edexcel BTEC Certificate in Preparation for Air Cabin Crew Service
  • EMTA Awards Ltd (EAL) Certificate in Air Cabin Crewing.

  • Minimum age between 18 and 21
  • Physically fit
  • Normal colour vision and good eyesight
  • Height requirements (these vary between different airlines)
  • Weight in proportion to height
  • Ability to swim at least 25 metres
  • Smart and well-groomed
  • No visible tattoos or body piercings

The right previous work experience can help in finding a job in this field. Employers look favourably on experience in customer service, nursing, or the hotel and catering trades.

All airlines provide in-house training for new employees; this typically runs from four to six weeks. Topics covered will include:
  • Security, safety and emergency procedures
  • First aid
  • Customs and immigration regulations
  • Customer relations and passenger care
  • Currency exchange
  • Galley management
  • Food preparation and service
  • Personal grooming

Once you are working, you will be required to undertake regular examinations to ensure that your knowledge of safety and emergency procedures is current, and that statutory first aid requirements are being met.
