Yoga therapist courses
Physical and mental techniques are used by yoga therapists to promote the body's own natural healing resources. This treatment utilizes a combination of movements and postures, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to promote good health and increase relaxation in patients with a wide range of conditions.
To practise as a yoga therapist requires: -
Qualification as a teacher
-
Completion of an approved therapy foundation course
-
An approved diploma as a yoga therapist.
The Yoga Biomedical Trust (YBT) and the Life Centre (LC) offer the Foundation Course in Yoga Therapy, as well as a new modular Diploma in Yoga Therapy. The first step is completion of the foundation course. This runs over four weekends, and provides an introduction to this therapy for qualified teachers.
Although there are no set academic entry requirements, knowledge of anatomy and physiology is desirable, and students must demonstrate that they can cope with the academic content of the course, which is at postgraduate level. The Therapy Diploma includes 24 weekends and a residential retreat and typically takes around two years to complete. In addition to practical work and yoga practice it includes study of:
-
Anatomy
-
Physiology
-
Pathology
-
Respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems
This qualification is recognised by both the Institute of Complementary Medicine and the NHS.
