Sport and exercise scientist jobs

There are three main areas sport and exercise scientists work in including:

  • Biomechanics: the examination of the causes and consequences of human movement, and the way the body interacts with apparatus and equipment.

  • Physiology: the way the body responds to training. This can involve the use of equipment such as heart monitors and oxygen analysers.

  • Psychology: the interaction between human behaviour and mental processes in relation to sport and exercise.

The ultimate goal of sport and exercise scientists is to help people to improve their sporting performance or general health. Sports and exercise scientists are normally graduates with sports science degrees. Other possible routes include degrees such as physical education (PE), physiology or psychology.

Entry requirements for sports science degrees would typically include at least five GCSEs (A-C), including maths and English, and three A levels, including science and maths. The best science options would be biology, biomechanics or chemistry. An alternative route is to study for a postgraduate degree.

Upon graduation, initial employment is often at a basic level, for example as a health and fitness instructor, leisure assistant, or coach, in order to gain solid practical experience in the filed.

The governing body for this field is British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), who offer nationally-recognised accreditation. BASES also offer a variety of workshops and conferences to allow professionals stay current with their CPD (Continuing Professional Development). Refer to the BASES website for details.
