Support, structure and encouragement are provided by Lifestyle consultants which are needed by clients to achieve their goals. This can be in their relationships, careers, fitness, or striking a balance between work and personal life. Lifestyle consultants do not tell clients what to do, but rather help them to explore their situation and find ways to achieve their aims.
Lifestyle consultants work with individuals or in a business environment, and there are opportunities to specialise in a particular area such as executive and business coaching, life transitions or education. There is currently no regulation of this field in the UK, but clients are increasingly likely to look for certification and membership of professional bodies.
For those interested in this field there is a wide variety of courses available. To be sure that you are selecting a course that will enhance your career prospects, look for the following on any course you might be considering:
Testimonials from others who have attended the course
Contacts with universities, or other coaching and mentoring bodies
Supervised practical sessions with a practising coach
Advice on setting up a business
Practical training such as workshops and seminars
Some universities offer masters' degrees in coaching, and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) offer an Advanced Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring.
The UK International Coach Federation (ICF) accredits coaches at three levels:
Associate - 250 hours coaching experience and 60 hours training
Professional - 750 hours experience and 125 hours training
Master - 2500 hours experience and 200 hours training.
