Art therapist jobs

If you are a little unsure of what is involved with art therapist jobs then the fitmap is designed to help you out. Working with clients, art therapists encourage self-expression through art. Patients may be suffering from a mental or physical illness, have learning difficulties or be recovering from a traumatic experience. Art therapists work in conjunction with psychologists and psychotherapists, nurses and social workers in order to integrate their therapy with other treatments.

To train as an art therapist, you will need to study for a postgraduate diploma accredited by the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT), and to work in NHS or social services you will need a post-graduate Diploma (or Masters) in Art Therapy or Art Psychotherapy.

Entry typically requires a degree or equivalent in either art and design, or teaching, psychology or social work. Several UK universities offer courses, which take around two years full-time, three years part-time. Subjects covered during training will include:

• Psychology
• Psychiatry
• Philosophy
• The history and development of art therapy

There will also be extensive practical training and clinical placements under the supervision of an experienced practitioner. Additionally, all students must also undergo therapy.

Voluntary or paid work experience perhaps within education or the health service or is useful both for entry onto courses and ultimately finding employment. Any experience working with clients with mental health difficulties or disabilities would also stand you in good stead.

Once you are qualified, you will need to maintain your skills and also undergo regular supervision from a practitioner who is registered as a supervisor.
