NLP - Neuro linguistic Programming

Developed in the early 70's, NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming for it's full title, was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. They were interested in how people influence one another, and in the possibility of being able to duplicate the behaviour, and therefore effectiveness, of highly influential people. NLP is incredibly effective in dealing with behaviour change.

NLP works upon a number of basic principles:
  • Communication is more than what you're saying - words are only a small part of what you say; the body communicates constantly in ways that go far beyond words.

  • People already have all the resources they need to effect a change - if you aren't succeeding, it's simply because the resources weren't in the right place at the right time.

  • Choice is better than no choice - true in any circumstance.

  • Every behaviour serves a positive intention in the context in which it has value - in other words, people do things for a reason, even if they don't know the reason, or the reason is flawed.

  • There is no such thing as failure, only feedback - every response is useful. Although you may hate the response, the knowledge you gain from it is valuable.

  • If someone can do something, then it can be modelled and taught to anyone else - that includes you!

  • The map is not the territory - our brains cannot contain every bit of information that comes to us in the world, so we create a "map of the territory" and then refer to the map for our information. If you can change a person's map, you can change their reality.

  • The meaning of your communication is the response you get - if you've ever said "that's not what I meant", you've experienced this!

  • If you aren't getting the response you want, try something different - it's amazing how often people repeat a failing strategy, expecting a different result.

  • People work perfectly - no one is "broken". They are functioning perfectly in what they are doing, even if it is ruining their life.

There are many practitioners now working in the UK who use this amazing and effective technique for a whole range of issues.
