Large employers typically have a career structure for their staff that would allow a hotel receptionist the chance of promotion to jobs such as shift leader or head receptionist. Some hotel chains also encourage staff to work in different departments, acquiring variety of skills and enhancing their promotion prospects.

Training such as HNC/HNDs or the Hotel and Catering International Management Association (HCIMA) Advanced Certificate will allow you to move into a role such as front office manager. There also exists the possibility to move into other areas within the trade such as events and banqueting services, sales, personnel or accounts.

Typical earnings would be around ?10,000 a year for a new employee, rising to between ?11,500 and ?17,500 a year with experience. In addition, some employers will also include meals and accommodation.
