Hotel manager careers

Dealing with the everyday problems, hotel managers are responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of a facility. They can be responsible for a wide range of areas including:

  • Front-of-house (reception, concierge, reservation)
  • Housekeeping
  • Banqueting
  • Accounting
  • Marketing
  • Compliance with licensing laws, health and safety, etc
  • Personnel
  • Maintenance, supplies and furnishings
  • Dealing with contractors and suppliers

In larger hotels, managers may be part of a team, responsible for just one of these areas, while in a small facility they will be responsible for everything.

In a large hotel, managers will typically have less contact with guests, spending their time overseeing employees. However, in a smaller establishment, the manager's role is much more hands on, dealing directly with guests and helping out wherever needed, for example carrying out reception duties, or serving meals.
