Rockport fitness walking test

Introduction

Unlike many VO2 max tests, the Rockport fitness walking test is suitable for people of all fitness levels.

What is the point?

The VO2 max is considered the best measures of overall cardio fitness. However, most tests are designed for athletes, and are thus not suitable for less fit populations, such as the elderly.

The Rockport fitness walking test allows almost anyone to get an objective measure of their fitness.

What do you need?

  • 400 metre track

  • Stopwatch

  • Assistant

How do you do the test?

  • Record your weight

  • Walk one mile (1609 metres) as fast as possible

  • Record the time to complete the mile

  • Immediately on finishing the walk record your heart rate (beats per minute)

What results you'll get :

Taking the test several times at regular intervals will allow you to assess changes in your fitness levels.

What is being measured again?

This is an objective measure of VO2 max suitable for all fitness levels.
