Special concerns for chiropractic treatment

Are there any special concerns that might contraindicate chiropractic care? The most common special concern that people raise is pregnancy - if you are pregnant, can you still receive chiropractic care?

The answer is simple - yes! Indeed, chiropractors suggest that keeping your spine aligned is one of the best things you can do if you are pregnant. Given the strain on the spine, and the incidence of low back pain among pregnant women, this would seem to make eminent good sense.

However, chiropractic care is about much more than simply reducing back pain. When your spine is misaligned, it can have a chain reaction throughout the body.

Chiropractors believe that these spinal misalignments (called vertebral subluxations) cause spine and nerve stress and ultimately affect the working of the entire body.

When a chiropractor makes a spinal adjustment to correct these subluxations, he is allowing the body to function better, and strengthening your immune system.

Pregnancy is a time of great stress on a woman's body, so anything that encourages her to be as strong and as healthy as possible should be encouraged. In addition, it is important that there is no interference to the nerve supply from the spine to the foetus.

The other strong argument for chiropractic care during pregnancy is that it is drug free. The shocking truth is that any medication you take during pregnancy has the potential to harm the foetus, whether prescription or over-the-counter.

Thus pregnant women should consider chiropractic treatment as a way to stay healthy, and deliver a healthy full-term baby.
