The complemetary treatment hypnotherapy works by using hypnosis to access your subconscious mind to change unhelpful patterns or habits. By using hypnotherapy in order to bring you into a state of altered consciousness you can use hypnotherapy for weight loss, relaxation or even quitting smoking.

Hypnotherapy bypasses the conscious, or critically aware, part of your mind. This does not however mean that a therapist can force you to do anything that you do not wish to do. Rather they work with you as a client to reach deeper levels in your consciousness where the roots of psychosomatic problems may be found.

During a session, you still have awareness and can stop any time you want to. It is simply a question of accessing another part of the mind.

As your brain is subjected to over 60,000 stimuli per second, your conscious mind is only capable of processing a tiny percentage of these. The rest are dealt with by your subconscious. This is also why you do not have to consciously think about breathing or making your heart beat. A hypnotic state is entirely natural and you may have experienced it already without even realising it. With a trained therapist, it can be a deeply relaxing method of accessing areas of your mind or memories that you are not consciously aware of. The subconscious is about helping you to survive but certain negative patterns or unhealthy and repressive ways of coping may become embedded there. By focussing on changes you want to make or visualising how you would like to be, you can teach your subconscious to recognise the importance of what your conscious mind desires.
