Hypertonic sports drinks

If you are involved in rigorous, long-lasting physical activity, a hypertonic sports drink is likely your best option.

Hypertonic sports drinks are going to have the largest concentration of carbohydrates per volume of liquid consumed, therefore providing your muscles with a greater source of fuel.

When you are exercising with great intensity, you are going to be burning a great deal more calories and the hypotonic or isotonic sports drinks are likely not going to be quite enough to meet your needs.

This is mostly going to be in the case of endurance runners or those participating in heavy-duty cycling activities. They are constantly moving and as such, will be burning up fuel at a rapid rate.

It is important to note though that these beverages are to be only taken in after the exercise session has been completed because since they are so high in carbohydrates, they will interfere with the absorption of the fluid and electrolytes if taken in while exercise is going on.

These beverages will usually contain about 240-320 calories per 500 ml of fluid, which equates to about 10-15% of total volume carbohydrates.

If you wish to make your own fluid replacement of this nature, blend together 400 ml of squashed orange along with one litre of water and a pinch of salt.
