On the cabbage soup diet plan, food intake is restricted to a soup which actually consists of a variety of vegetables including carrots, celery, tomatoes, onions and peppers.

When following the cabbage soup diet, you are allowed to eat unlimited amounts of soup, as it contains negligible calories, plus specific additional foods on each day of the 7-day plan. Alcohol is forbidden, and the only drinks allowed are unsweetened tea, fruit juice and water.

Claims that the soup has fat-burning properties are untrue as most of the weight lost is water; however, this loss of fluid does serve to cleanse the system, essentially detoxifying the body. The diet is only a temporary fix, however, and not a solution for a long-term healthy eating plan, as it has a low nutritional value.

As the diet deprives the body of essential nutrients, it should only be followed for a maximum of 7 days with at least a 2-week break in between. Prolonged use may lead to deficiency diseases such as osteoporosis and anaemia.

In summary, this plan can provide a good kick-start to a healthy eating regime and an effective means of shedding pounds for a special event. However, as the diet is so strict, a lot of planning is required and the diet can seem monotonous and restrictive.
