Self tanning

A great option for getting some colour is self tanning - the one where you don;t go to the tanning salon or studio and rely on your own judgement for colour and tone!

When you don't want to run the risk of damage from the UV rays in both natural sunlight and sun beds, self tanning products like sprays could be the answer. It is recommended that you try several self tanning products to see which works best with your skin and coloring - failure to do so could lead to an embarrassing experience!

Whether you choose a cream, gel or spray form for self tanning, look for those products that are made with the active ingredients that stimulates pigment in the skin, rather than simply dying it. These will give a natural looking tan that is more complimentary to your own coloring. Look also for a product that is hypoallergenic and acts as a moisturizer.

There are several things that you can do to improve the quality of the tan you get at home :

Before you tan:

  • Shower and exfoliate

  • Shave where desired

  • Do not apply any lotions or cream to the skin

  • Remove any jewelry

Applying the tan :

  • Test the product on an unexposed area first - for example your inner wrists - to see how your skin reacts.

  • Wear a glove so the lotion doesn't stain your hands.

  • Don't forget your feet and under your arms.

  • Apply lightly to your face, and adjust the tone with make-up.

  • Apply lotion after a few hours.

  • Wait at least four hours before you shower.

That's it. If you find any places that need a touch up, look for sunless towelettes - you just wipe them over your skin, and it darkens within an hour.
