Weight training programs

A form of 'resistance' exercise, wight training programs can be set up at most Spas with a gym. The aim is to build up muscle strength through lifting. Weight training has become increasingly popular with both men and women.

While men tend to be more interested in building bulk with their weight training programs, women are more likely to focus on toning and sculpting their bodies. Cliched images of body builders are often inaccurate as the use of illegal steroids can distort the effects of this form of exercise, as well as being dangerous for your health.

In reality, how you look depends on your individual body, which exercises you do, and how often. A qualified instructor in weight training is important so that you can choose a programme that suits you and avoid hurting yourself. It's also important to warm up and cool down. Some exercises are designed to work out a variety of muscles while others focus on a particular area.

What are the benefits?

Muscle strength is an important part of physical fitness and weight training can improve your overall health. These kinds of work out can help you to feel better about your body. Feeling physically fit and strong often increases your confidence and gives you a more positive outlook on life. It can also help you to lose fat and avoid strain or injury to undeveloped muscles.

It increases your sense of balance and ability to coordinate. It can also decrease the risk of osteoporosis. It's not so much about having the biggest muscles but about building strength within your body so that you feel healthier and happier.

For many the increase in muscle, or more toned bodies, is a real motivator, however you may need to go through a period when nothing seems to be happening and you are not getting anywhere. This is the key time when most people lose interest - just before you start to see real gains!
