There is a truly amazing selection of Pilates equipment available to purchase.
This is an activity that was designed to use props and mats, and thus it comes as no surprise that as the popularity has grown, so has the list of Pilates equipment available.
So if you are a devotee of this activity, here's a brief list of the Pilates equipment you might find:
- Trapeze tables
- Arcs and Barrels
While some of these are pretty obvious - for example there's a great range of books, videos and DVDs available - others will be unfamiliar to all but the most devoted. So here's a brief low-down on some of the more esoteric items:
Reformer. Perhaps the most famous item used in the activity, this is a moving carriage that allows you to perform low impact, resistance based exercises, in a variety of positions - sitting, kneeling, standing and lying down.
Trapeze Tables, Cadillacs, Half Trapezes. These look like a set of monkey bars over a table and allow you to do everything from push ups to advanced acrobatic moves on the bars.
Chairs. Not just your dining room chair, but a specialist item on which you can improve your balance, strength and coordination.
Arcs and Barrels. Improve your strength and flexibility while working in several planes on this device.
Other items you might find include the Springboard, Wall Unit, Ped-a-Pul, C-Shaper, and the Fletcher Tower.
