Stability disc exercise advice

Initially just a rehab tool, balance discs are now found in many gyms, health clubs, even as a part of home gyms.

Balance discs are a very simple concept - air-filled plastic wafers just large enough to stand on. They're made by a number of manufacturers, with prices ranging from about ?20 to ?30 each.

Balance Discs are very effective for core strengthening work, with the following benefits:

  • Improved balance
  • Stronger core muscles
  • Better posture
  • Reduced risk of back injury
  • Improved proprioception

Because of their uneven, domed shape, they force you to use a whole range of muscles that are rarely used in a traditional, stable workout. In addition, you can strengthen your ankles, calves, and thighs simply by standing on them, which makes them a great tool for runners, and all athletes who use their legs - that's just about everyone!

Because they are compact and portable, you can use them for working out at home, or even when travelling.

Basic exercises include:

1. Standing on one foot for 30-60 seconds to increase balance and stability.
2. Stand on one or two discs to perform upper or lower body exercises.
3. Sitting on the disc to perform abdominal exercises.
